O’DATIWA MASS METERING PROGRAMME

Electricity plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of any  country. In Nigeria, electricity is listed on the concurrent legislative list as stipulated  in  the  1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Part ll (as amended) Second Schedule, Sections 14 and 15. This provision grants both federal and  state governments the authority to legislate on electricity generation, transmission, and distribution.

Despite this backdrop, the level of electricity supply in Ondo  State was nothing to write home  about. Before year 2017; only  seven out of eighteen local government areas  (LGAs)  had substantial  access to electricity  from  the  national  grid.  These  areas  were Akure  South,  Akure North,  Ondo   West,  Ondo   East, lfedore, ldanre, and Owo, representing less than 40% of the local governments in the state. Within these connected areas, electricity access was limited, with less than 30% of Ondo  East LGA and under 60% of Owo LGA  having   grid-tied  electricity.
